MNS chief Raj Thackeray flanked by actor Riteish Vilasrao Deshmukh and director Nishikant Kamat

Ever since it’s launch, Nishikant Kamat’s Lai Bhari has been creating a buzz due to several factors — Riteish Deshmukh’s debut in Marathi films, Salman Khan’s item number in the film, National Award winning director Nishikant Kamat’s return to Marathi films after nine years sinceDombivli Fast, and a lesser known fact — that the movie is based on Sajid Nadiadwala’s story idea.
From the trailer that was unveiled at the event, Riteish Deshmukh plays the role of Mauli, a tapori with a generous heart. Tanta nahi tar ghanta nahi (there is no fun if there is no fight) seems to be the actor’s taqiya kalam in the film. Dressed in ganji, bright floral shirts knotted at the ends (very Amitabh Bachchan in Deewar style) and trousers with a handkerchief tied round his neck, the actor looks very convincing as atapori. The trailer looks very promising and depicts scenes where Deshmukh fights the evil. TV actor Sharad Kelkar essays the role of a villain while Tanvi Azmi plays Deshmukh’s mother. Incidentally this is Azmi’s Marathi debut as well.
Referring to himself as Ritiesh Vilasrao Deshmukh, the actor said, “I don’t know what to say. I am too nervous. I am a newcomer, a debutant. This is my first film.” said the actor. This had the entire crowd in splits as he went on to say that, “Please consider this as my entry to Marathi films.” Genelia Deshmukh, who is one of the producers of the film, had a sweet smile on her face at her husband’s remark.
Guests at the launch were greeted with a haldi-kumkum and peda in a traditional Maharashtrian style. After a song sung by Kunal Ganjawala praising Lord Vithoba was played, the film’s team went up on stage as Sajid Nadiadwala released the music. The background score has Guru Thakur’s lyrics set to tune by Ajay-Atul. Ajay of Ajay-Atul also makes his debut as a lyricist with the film.
At the unveiling and first look of Lai Bhari, Raj Thackeray, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief, was seen with wife Sharmila Thackeray. Some of the other guests present were Nanubhai Jaisinghani, Guneet Monga, Sonali Kulkarni, Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Kothare, Kishori Shahane Vij, Vijay Patkar, Sai Tamhankar, Ajinkya Deo, Ravi Jadhav, Sanjay Jadhav, Rajesh Shringarpure, Chandrakant Kulkarni, Sonalee Kulkarni and Swapnil Bandodkar.
The film is been presented by Zee Talkies and produced by Jitendra Thackeray, Ameya Khopkar and Genelia Deshmukh. Lai Bhari is set for release on July 11, across Maharashtra.
